Livingstone is the most popular destination in Zambia, drawing tourists with the majestic Victoria Falls, and a host of exciting activities. While in the past Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe was the preferred place from which to visit the falls, political strife has recently boosted Livingstone’s popularity. The bustling town now has impressive tourism infrastructure, with a wide range of accommodation, from campsites and backpackers to guesthouses, lodges and five-star resorts.
The Victoria Falls area is the adventure capital of Southern Africa and a fantastic destination for adrenaline junkies. Take the plunge and bunji jump off one of the highest bunji jumps in the world overlooking the falls. Go white-water rafting in the Zambezi below the falls in one of the world’s most famous stretches of white water. You can also go river-boarding, white-water kayaking and jet boating in the river. There’s also abseiling, rap jumping down the side of the gorge, and gorge-swinging. For the best views of Victoria Falls, go on a helicopter flip or microlight flight. For more sedate activities, there are river cruises up the Zambezi and trips to Livingstone Island, where you can have lunch or tea overlooking the falls. If you’re into wildlife, there is horse riding along the Zambezi, lion encounter tours, elephant-back safaris and game drives, as well as walking safaris in Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park.
