With its vast African wilderness, this unspoilt region of Limpopo is named after its setting in the valley of the great Olifants River. The eastern side hosts South Africa’s largest game reserve, the Kruger National Park which gives visitors a bush and wildlife experience. A gateway to the park is Phalaborwa, also known as the town of two summers and home to the country’s cherished cream liqueur Amarula. High in the Lobedu Mountains, near the sub-tropical town Tzaneen with its various fruit farms, lies the Modjadji Nature Reserve. It has a unique forest of the earth’s largest and oldest cycad species. Another highlight is the royal palace of the legendary rain queen, Modjadji, of the Balobedu people who still continue their traditional life within the scenic forest valleys. In the nearby town Modjadjiskloof, visitors can have a beer inside a 6000 year old baobab tree, the Sunland’s Baobab, which has been transformed into a pub for up to 60 people.
