Overberg literally means ‘over the mountain’ and refers to the region’s geographic location relative to the first settlements of Cape Town. The region offers beautiful beaches, impressive mountain ranges and rich biodiversity with abundant bird life and indigenous fynbos. Explore valleys with vineyards and orchards, landscapes of green, gold and brown. Visit Cape Agulhas, the southern-most point of the African continent as well as the official dividing point between the chilly Atlantic and the warm Indian Ocean. The picturesque towns in the Overberg reflect the past and the present, playing host to mission stations, shipwrecks and old architectural treasures. Hermanus is claimed to be one of the best spots in the world for land-based whale watching. For sport enthusiasts and eco adventurers, tackle a 4×4 trail, ride a horse, go on a sunset cruise, learn to fly fish or dare to go shark cage diving. For the not so adventurous, enjoy the wines, sit back in the country gardens with a good book or relax in the natural hot springs.
