Established in 1979, the Karoo National Park outside Beaufort West in the Western Cape, spans some 73000 hectares of the Great Karoo. It’s a landscape of alluring table-top plateaus and thirsty flats, of spiny veld and splintered rock.
The Karoo National Park is one of the most underrated parks in South Africa. With a wide variety of wildlife such as black rhino, buffalo and Cape mountain zebra, it has a lot to offer. Because the Karoo is a semi-desert, game spotting is particularly easy. Bird watching is a highlight, with 20 pairs of breeding eagles and several other types of birds of prey in the park, in addition to many other species. The park has 9 000 species of plants, and is thought to have the richest desert flora and largest variety of succulents in the world.

This is an absolute gem of a park. We stayed overnight on our way to the coast. Facilities are top class, staff are friendly and the scenery, birding and game viewing was awesome.
