Sossusvlei, a huge clay pan encircled by massive sand dunes, lies at the heart of the Namib Desert in the Namib Naukluft Park. The 300 metre-high red dunes of Sossusvlei, which are among the highest dunes in the world, are one of the most spectacular sights in Namibia. Climb the dunes for unforgettable views of a sea of undulating rust-coloured sand. On rare occasions, heavy rains create a miraculous turquoise desert lake in the usually bone-dry salt pan.

Near to Sossusvlei in the Namib Naukluft Park, Dead Vlei and Dune 45 are popular attractions. Dead Vlei is dry lake around 500 years old. Surrounded by the world’s highest sand dunes, Dead Vlei was formed when a drought hit the area and the watercourse from the Tsauchab River was blocked by the encroaching sand dunes. It’s hauntingly beautiful – skeletons of trees left behind, a reminder of the devastating effects of water deprivation. Dune 45, possibly the most photographed dune and a travel icon for Namibia, is famous for its marvelous views, which can be enjoyed after a race to the top at sunrise.

Activities in this area include guided hikes of the dune fields, hot-air balloon rides, dune racing at Dune 45 and of course photography.
