Sleepover hides, guided walking trails, 4×4 adventure trails … you name it. Under the new dispensation, SANParks has begun diversifying visitor attractions with a range of exciting activities allowing you to experience the park from a completely different perspective, whether you’re a first-time visitor or have driven the roads for years.
Two hides have been converted into sleepover hides, allowing you to spend an evening in the bush while enjoying the safety and comfort of a hide. They are equipped with fold-down beds, mattresses, bed linen and basic cutlery and crockery. Basic toilet facilities are provided and a small fenced-in lapa area behind the hides means you can enjoy the evening around an open fire in safety. You may only book the facilities en bloc and for a maximum of one night. One drawback, however, is that you can take occupancy of the hide only 30 minutes before gate closing time and you have to be out 30 minutes after gate opening, which could be a problem in summer, unless you are an early riser.
Overlooking the Sable Dam east of the Phalaborwa Gate, the hide can only be booked at the Phalaborwa Gate and sleeps a maximum of nine.
Sited on the Pioneer Dam near Mopani Rest Camp, Shipandani can be booked through central reservations or from Mopani; guests who have already booked in at Mopani will receive a discounted rate. The hide sleeps a maximum of six.
For bookings contact SANParks on phone 012-426-5117 or e-mail hestherv@parks-sa.co.za. No children younger than 12 years old are allowed on the trails. If you require accommodation at the beginning or end of the trail you must book this separately with central reservations – see page 14.
