Early trekboers found life on the high plateau over the Bokkeveld Mountains so tough and the local tribes so hostile they came up with the Afrikaans expression, ‘Hy’s Bokkeveld toe,’ meaning the person was dead. So the stock farmers who founded Nieuwoudtville, a sleepy Northern Cape dorp a few kilometres beyond the top of the modern Vanrhyns Pass, carefully chose a spot where there’s more rainfall than on the rest of the plateau.

Today the village is famous as a centre of biodiversity, most evident in spring when carpets of flowers transform the dusty veld into a kaleidoscope of bright colours. Astute farmers open their gates to visitors and set up rustic restaurants which breathe character, from the egte boerekos served to the Voortrekker prints on the walls.

But throughout the year, it’s a refuge for those weary of racing along in the fast lane. It’s a place where you can live the simple life with the added benefit of modern comforts and let the silence of the Bokkeveld’s starry nights grow on you while the embers of your braai fire die down.

During the day, you can visit the local sights or test your endurance hiking in Oorlogskloof Nature Reserve – it’s country that’s as tough and rugged as any the early trekboers encountered. Just make sure you do return from this extreme Bokkeveld experience.

What to do in Nieuwoudtville

Nieuwoudtville Waterfall Reserve is at its best after winter rains when the 30-metre waterfall on the Doring River gushes through a narrow gap.

The quiver tree or kokerboom forest signposted off the R357 to Loeriesfontein isn’t a conventional forest, but is the largest and most southerly colony of the striking giant Aloe dichotoma. The plants are spread across the hot north-facing slopes of a series of flat-topped koppies.

At Oorlogskloof Glacial Pavement beside the road south of Nieuwoudtville, you’ll be 300 million years too late to see the glacier slide past, but gouges left in the rock are still visible and an excellent interpretation board by the Geological Society of South Africa will fill you in on the drama.

The Dutch Reformed Church is a magnificent neo-Gothic structure built of local sandstone and has possibly the only church monument to debt in the country.

Vanrhyns Pass on the R27 is a spectacular scenic drive that takes you from the top of the Bokkeveld Mountains, down a series of steep switchbacks to the arid Knersvlakte of the coastal plain.

Hiking in Oorlogskloof Nature Reserve, 16 kilometres south of Nieuwoudtville, is strenuous in rugged terrain crisscrossed by ravines. Two multi-day trails and two circular day hikes require a high level of fitness. Tel 027-218-1010, email wpretorius@sp.ncape.gov.za.

Go 4x4ing at Papkuilsfontein Guest Farm if you’re looking for a challenge with great views. The 15-kilometre trail has a difficulty rating of four to five and costs R250 a vehicle. Tel 027-218-1246.

Groenrivier, the original farm on which Nieuwoudtville was laid out in 1897, is a great spot to unleash your creativity taking photos of the stone farmhouse ruins. The wide arch of one building was a garage under which fancy horse-drawn buggies could pass with ease. Further out of the village on the road to Perdekraal is Ouplaas, once a small community with views across the plateau all the way to the Hantam Mountains.

Where to eat in Nieuwoudtville

Smidswinkel Restaurant in the heart of Nieuwoudtville has a cosy fireplace where visitors can swap stories of their day’s discoveries before tucking into good farm-style meals. It also functions as an informal information centre and host Hendrik van Zijl often gives short talks in the restaurant and takes guests for a walk in the veld to show them some of his favourite flowers. Note: There is now a special bathroom at Smidswinkel for the mobility challenged and visitors are welcome to use it. Tel 027-218-1535.

Die Nedersetting restaurant is housed in what was once the town’s bank. The most popular dishes are lamb chops and bobotie with yellow peaches and rice; vegetarians are catered for by arrangement. Booking essential. Tel 027-218-1897 or 082-496-7875.

Matjiesfontein Farm, 13 kilometres south of town, has a characterful eatery, which serves hearty boerekos lunches during flower season only in what was once the area’s first school. Expect dishes such as curried afval, lamb bredie and venison pies served on enamel plates to the rhythm of a waltz or vastrap spinning on an old turntable. Tel 027-218-1217.

Papkuilsfontein Guest Farm’s restaurant offers decadent cakes and local dishes served with flair. Outside of flower season, bookings are taken only for groups of six or more. Tel 027-218-1246.

Where to shop in Nieuwoudtville

The nearest supermarket is in Vanrhynsdorp on the N7, but a couple of village shops sell traditional specialties of the area that will add flavour to any visit.

Nieuwoudtville Butchery is famous for its lamb, boerewors and ready-to-cook tripe. Tel 027-218-1007.

Skuinskoek Paleis specialises in traditional breads and cakes of the area, such as roosterbrood and mosbeskuit. Dishes such as skilpadjies (lamb’s liver wrapped in fat) and pofaddertjies (stuffed intestines) can be pre-ordered either ready to eat or ready to cook. Tel 078-265-3815.

Where to stay in Nieuwoudtville

Hilandi se Veldhuis at Matjiesfontein Farm is a trip back in time. The old stone building has walls as thick as your arm and the kitchen boasts a large open hearth. Three single beds and two doubles in a barn-like room can accommodate an entire family. Modern amenities include an en suite bathroom with flushing loo. Costs from R180 a person a night sharing. Tel 027-218-1217, email kobusboereplaas@hantam.co.za.

Van Zijl’s Guesthouses is a collection of five lovingly restored, traditional sandstone cottages scattered around Nieuwoudtville. Piet se Huis is the smallest with one bedroom, while Bokveld is the biggest (sleeps eight). Môreson is the last thatched pioneer house in the village. Self-catering costs from R240 a person a night sharing and B&B from R290. There’s also a comfortable site for caravan and camping with six stands and a communal stone-walled lapa. R170 a stand includes power point, lights and water (max four people a stand). Tel 027-218-1535, email nieuvz@intekom.co.za, www.nieuwoudtville.co.za.

Papkuilsfontein Guest Farm offers six cottages, each sleeping between two and six people, with plenty of privacy. Self-catering rates are from R330 a person sharing and meals are available at the on-site restaurant. Tel 027-218-1246, email info@papkuilsfontein.com, www.papkuilsfontein.com.

Top spots to see flowers in and around Nieuwoudtville

Hantam National Botanical Garden’s huge variety of bulbs peak in September. Entrance is R14 an adult, kids R6, and guided tours cost R50 each. Tel 027-218-1200, email hantam@sanbi.org.za.

At Matjiesfontein Farm, south of the town, drive a circular route through fields of flowers. R10 a person. Tel 083-643-3188. Papkuilsfontein Guest Farm’s guided 2,5-hour tour includes rock art, a breathtaking waterfall and canyon, as well as wild flowers in season. R80 a person. A short drive on its flower route costs R10 a person. Tel 027-218-1246.

Walk among the blooms at Nieuwoudtville Wild Flower Reserve, beside the road to Calvinia.

Nieuwoudtville – the bulb capital of the world

Nieuwoudtville is a biodiversity hotspot straddling both the northernmost extent of the Cape Floral Kingdom and the Succulent Karoo biomes. It has one of the highest concentrations of bulbs and cormous plants (geophytes) in the world – of the 1 350 flower species on the Bokkeveld Plateau, more than 300 are geophytes found in the vicinity of Nieuwoudtville.

Most bloom in spring amid carpets of wild perennials, creating swathes of colour on fallow farm fields and local nature reserves. Peak flowering is in August and September, but autumn provides a little-known spectacle when the veld is covered in brunsvigia, a bulb with large, pink, blooms that burst out of bare ground. This happens only if there’s good rain in February or March.

The history of Nieuwoudtville’s Dutch Reformed Church

When Nieuwoudtville’s Dutch Reformed Church was completed in 1907, it was discovered that most of the money raised for its construction and upkeep had disappeared. Suspicion fell on the church secretary, who died suddenly, and the congregation was left staring bankruptcy in the face, unable to pay the dominee or the builder. By the time a new minister was recruited three years later, bits of the church had been sold or pawned. Dominee WP Steenkamp rode as far as Springbok raising funds and, within three years, the debt was repaid. This monument beside the church lists those who helped the church out of its debt crisis.

Local records state the church secretary was later spotted living a new life in Namibia and, when his grave was exhumed, the remains of a pig was found.

Getting to Nieuwoudtville

From Cape Town, take the N7 north and turn off at the R27 through Vanrhynsdorp. Drive up the edge of the Bokkeveld Mountains over Vanrhyns Pass and, 8 km later, turn right into Nieuwoudtville.

Grading: 2 – 5
Distance: 72 km total
Time: 2 to 3 days to complete all trails
Self guide and guided
Cost: R150 per vehicle

The natural features at Doornrivier will make a large 4×4 seem small by driving through the deep, narrow dongas to rock koppies and towering trees. There are four individually graded trails offering fun for novice 4x4ers and soft-roaders, as well as some serious challenges for experts. Two of the trails (especially the rocky Blue Route) are serious four-star challenges in wet weather and require diff-lock, recovery equipment and a seriously grippy all-terrain tyre.

The way there
From Zeerust, take the R49 to Gaborone. 9 km out of town, turn right on Doornrivier 4×4.

One of South Africa’s three terror trails, Moegatle features the ‘unbelievable rock’, Tsogwe. Various trails can keep you busy for up to three days but shorter routes are possible. This trail uses elements of all types of driving and offers an unusual combination of loose and solid rock, sand, mud and water. Every obstacle has a bypass or ‘chicken’ route, but videos of the day’s events are played each evening in the pub so make sure you at least attempt each obstacle. If you listen to the guides, they shouldn’t be a problem.

The way there
Take the N4 west out of Pretoria, take R104 north. After passing Xanadu Eco-Park, turn right onto R511 toward Brits. Continue on R511 towards Thabazimbi, Moegatle is situated on the Veekraal/Dikhololo turn off 30 km from Brits.

Distance: Four trails, totaling 81 km
Time: 2 – 4 hours depending on the trail

Just 28 km from Groot Marico and approximately two and a half hours from Johannesburg, Riverbend Guest Farm is on the scenic 3 000-hectare Draaifontein Farm. There are four 4×4 trails that take you through river crossings, along winding dirt roads and up over some really technical rocky terrain to the top of Langkloof. Stop off to take in the scenery and nature’s beauty, and take advantage of the naturally formed rock pools for a revitalising swim while on your route. There is also a valley section where you will be driving through thick vegetation providing welcome shade, cool and the opportunity to do loads of water crossings. Langkloof is home to a variety of birdlife, including the pearl spotted owl and black eagle. Look out for wildlife including jackal, brown hyena, antelope, monkeys and baboons. Quad bikes, two wheelers and mountain bikes are also welcome.

The way there
From Johannesburg, drive on the Botswana Highway past Rustenburg, Swartruggens and Groot Marico. 8 km past Groot Marico turn left on the Rietvaly road. After 10 km the road splits, keep left on the Kuilfontein road, then turn left on the Draaifontein road. Stop at the first house on your left, after the bridge.

This is one of the new, guided wilderness experiences on offer in Kruger National Park. The landscape consists mainly of granite and gneiss, deep and sandy watersheds and deeply incised watercourses. Trail gradients vary from reasonably good to steep and 4×4 capabilities are necessary in the rainy season. Only six vehicles (including the guide’s) are allowed on the trail at one time, allowing you opportunities to see impala, elephant, buffalo, hippo, kudu and waterbuck and maybe even a few nyala and sable.

The way there
Only six vehicles are allowed on the trail at one time and bookings can only be made on the day, so get there early. The route isn’t too challenging and uses mainly dirt management roads with a few riverbeds and dongas. The main appeal is in getting away from the crowds and getting out on your own to really see the wild side of Kruger National Park.

Sekororo 4×4 Adventure Trails

GPS Coordinates: S24° 21’ 17” E30° 57’ 08”
Grading: 4 – 5
Distance: 16 km – 100 km
Time: One or two days
Guided
Cost: One day R650, two days R850

There are two options at Sekororo, the more challenging 16#km trail, which can take two days to complete, and the longer trail that can be up to 100 km, as the route is up to you. Both are guided by Louw Booysen, owner of Sekororo 4×4 Adventure Trails. The excitement starts just outside of Colaco with a tricky crossing of the Makhutswi River. After that it heads for the Drakensberg where the trail starts innocently enough with a bit of a boulder climb. It winds its way over the Drakensberg escarpment and into the valleys on the other side, repeatedly crisscrossing the Makhutswi River. On the second day, the climbs become steeper, with vehicles clinging to the mountain – a sheer drop on the other side. At this point you really need to keep your wits about you.

The way there
From Pretoria, take the N1 north all the way through Polokwane, Take the R71 east to Haenertsburg, until the R528, turn right and continue to Tzaneen. Turn right on the R36 and follow Ofcolaco to the R527. Go east on the R527 until you reach Sekororo.

Most of the trail is suitable for 4x2s with high clearance but there are some sections only recommended for 4x4s and 4x2s with diff-locks. The obstacles, steep slopes and boulders will test your vehicle, but are good fun. Apart from the magnificent views at the end, a dip in one of the river pools is another highlight of this route.

GPS Coordinates: S33° 10’ 39” E23° 41’ 48”
Grading: 2 – 4
Distance: All trails total 34 km
Time: 5 – 6 hours
Guided and self-drive
Cost: R80 a vehicle

Set in the Rooiberg Mountains, overlooking Lesotho’s Maluti Mountains, Didibeng offers numerous trails ranging from fairly easy, to white-knuckled madness. The trails are well signposted and also indicate what lies ahead as well as the grading of the trail. Tracks range from very steep inclines to tight twists and turns, with loose and crumbling basalt rock and long sections of topsoil that can become very slippery when wet. The Ventersberg Trail is by far the most challenging, heading right to the top of the Ventersberg before taking you back down again. There are various turn-offs to shorter routes along the trail and many sections involve loose rocks and gravels, so keep an eye on your traction.

The way there
From Bethlehem on the N5, take the R26 to Fouriesburg. Once in Fouriesburg, follow the signs to Meiringskloof from Martin Street.

Accommodation
There are two mountain bush camps starting at R30 a night for camping. Alternatively one can stay at the Meiringskloof chalets at the bottom of the mountain.

Koranna Getaway

GPS Coordinates: S28° 89’ 41” E27° 30’ 56”
Grading: 3 – 5
Distance: Both trails total 31 km
Time: 4 – 5 hours each
Self-drive
Cost: R350 a vehicle to do both trails

Spanning the lower plateau grasslands of the eastern Free State, Koranna’s two trails are perfect for 4x4ers seeking a bit tranquillity. Originally built by woodcutters, the challenging Kloof Trail is a hardcore ride from the onset. There’s a waterfall, rocky stream crossings, a forest section and the infamous Pofadder Pass, which is very steep with little grip. Once you get to the top, take a moment to enjoy the spectacular view from the top of the Korannaberg. The longer Plateau Trail is less perilous and more suited to novice 4x4ers, while still offering challenging terrain, water-crossings and spectacular views. If you like to stay at low revs, then hang around after the trail and enjoy the beautiful picnic spots, a dip in the one of the many natural rock pools or a quiet drink around the lapa

The way there
From Bloemfontein take the N8 towards Ladybrand. After approximately 80 km turn left onto the R709. Turn right onto the R703 towards Clocolan. Drive for 20 km, Koranna is on the left.

Accommodation
There is an isolated bushcamp situated under a nearby witstinkhoutboom with no facilities for R50 a person a night. There are also camping grounds around the main lapa with electricity and ablutions for R100 a night.

Lekoa Lodge 4X4 trail

GPS Coordinates: S26° 57’ 17” E28° 43’ 28”
Grading: 1 – 4 (seasonal)
Distance: 8 km
Time: 2 hours
Self-drive and guided (booking essential)
Cost: R100 a vehicle for one trail ride. R350 for the whole day

Situated in the northernmost part of the Free State, Lekoa’s immaculate surroundings make 4x4ing as pleasing as it is challenging. Just one hour from Johannesburg, it’s perfectly positioned to get your 4×4 out of the city and onto the terrain for which it was designed. The trail’s grading is seasonal and self-drives can be done at own risk. The dam wall section is particularly hair-raising, requiring precision control when ascending and descending into the turns.

The way there
Lekoa Lodge is situated on the R54 near Villiers. The lodge is signposted from the N3 off-ramp.

Accommodation
Lekoa Lodge offers camping for R100 a person a night.

Rebellie Game Farm 4×4 Trail

GPS Coordinates: S28° 34’ 55” E28° 29’ 15”
Grading: 3 – 5
Distance: Both trails total 17 km
Time: 7 hours
Self-drive
Cost: R200 a vehicle

Not for the faint of heart, the two trails at Rebellie Game Farm in the Maluti Transfrontier Park, offer terrain that is technically tough as well as daunting. The Kloof Trail and Mountain Trail are the highest trails in the country, at 2 200 m above sea level. There is a picnic spot en route, which also marks the end of the ‘easy stuff’ and the beginning of the trail’s rockier sections. Conquering the serious inclines and declines on the trail will reward the driver with stunning views of the Rooiberge, Golden Gate and Lesotho.

The way there
Rebellie Game Farm is 14 km outside of Clarens, just off the R712.

Finding a scenic trail without venturing too far out of the CBD is the perfect solution to weekday 4×4 withdrawal. Groenkloof, on the outskirts of Pretoria, is just that. This relatively easy route offers drivers the chance to catch up on some wildlife viewing while negotiating the trail. The park is home to sable, red hartebeest, zebra, duiker, kudu, impala, blue wildebeest, blesbok, ostrich, giraffe and jackal. Visitors receive a guidebook upon entrance, which includes hints on 4×4 driving and etiquette. There’s a challenging water crossing on the route, with a few steep, rocky climbs, but all obstacles have a bypass route.

The way there
Groenkloof Nature Reserve is situated just south of Pretoria, on Christina De Wit Avenue.

Accommodation
There are basic camping facilities situated 10 km from the start of the trail for R50 a night. Caravanners can use the adjacent Fountains Resort to set up camp.

Grading: 3 ½
Distance: 9 km
Time: 3 hours
Self-drive
Cost: R180 a vehicle

Situated along the Hennops River, about 40#km from Sandton and Pretoria, the Hennops Off-road Trail is a great location for city-straddled drivers wanting to break out for a weekend of rugged off-roading. The trail offers some exciting 4×4 terrain, including absurd descents, tyre-challenging ascents, dongas, mud holes, water crossings and axle-twisting side slopes – an extreme 4x4ers haven. Despite these challenges, the trail is open to drivers of all experience levels and bypass routes can be found on all the difficult sections. There is also a range of wildlife tobe seen on the drive including zebra, blue wildebeest, blesbok and impala as well as a variety of bird life.

The way there
From Johannesburg, take the R511 from Fourways towards Hartebeespoort. Drive for approximately 28 km; the entrance to the Hennops Off-road Trail is on the left.

Distance: 15 km
Time: 2 – 3 hours

Sandwani could be considered the boot camp of 4×4 driving. It consists of three old quarry excavations that offer a complete range of 4×4 obstacles. The trail provides an excellent training opportunity for drivers, especially if there is someone more experienced in the group to guide the novices. Driving the trail in wet conditions offers quite a challenge, as the terrain is completely different and very slippery. Obstacles include water crossings, ascents, descents and cross-axles that can be tackled in any order. Each of the obstacles is graded and drivers are encouraged to take their time and inspect each one before attempting it. Off-rad bikes and quads are welcome, but are restricted to separate tracks.
Kliphuiskloof Trail

GPS Coordinates: S31 28’ 29” E19 46’ 33”
Grading: 4
Distance: 59 km
Time: at least 6 hours
Self-drive
Cost: R150 a vehicle

On the old Elandsvlei farm, Kliphuiskloof is a rough circular trail around the Tankwa and Tra-Tra rivers that flow into the Doring River. The very rocky terrain offers great mountain driving opportunities. Although it starts off fairly easy-going, the route changes dramatically for some serious on-the-edge driving. It’s not for the faint-hearted as there are loads of toe-curling moments while you cling to the side of the mountain. There are lots of viewing spots and the riverbed is a great camping spot.

The way there
Take the R355 from Ceres and turn left at the Elandsvlei turnoff.

Accommodation
No accommodation available.
